David Moyes wanted a more severe punishment for Yakubu Ayegbeni’s belated return from the African Cup of Nations than an £80,000 fine and one-game ban but, presented with the peace offering of a match ball last night, the Everton manager had no choice but to invite the £11m striker back in from the cold.
Last week in Norway the Nigerian was given the chance to atone for going awol on the way back from Ghana but it was only in the second leg with Brann, as Everton posted their record victory in Europe, that all was forgiven in the eyes of Moyes. Yakubu became the Chelsea Drakt first player since Andy Gray in 1985 to register a European hat-trick for Everton, securing a captivating last-16 tie against Fiorentina.
“If we keep fighting like that I think we will get to the final,” said Yakubu, whose three goals took his season’s tally for Everton to 15 and were his first in the competition since helping Middlesbrough to the Uefa Cup final in 2006. With Andrew Johnson also gaining reward for another tireless contribution with two outstanding finishes, the depth of Everton’s attack and a performance level raised by the return of Steven Pienaar will also encourage Moyes for the final hurdle.
“Yak is back in favour now,” the manager conceded. “This was his first game back at Goodison [since Ghana] and you always know he’s got that in him. What people don’t appreciate is that he’s only 25, albeit a Nigerian 25, and so if that is his age he’s still got a good few years ahead of him.”
Everton have missed Yakubu’s predatory instincts and they were invaluable against a Brann side who, although in the midst of their close season, initially threatened to capitalise on a sluggish start by the home side. A sweeping finish beyond Hakon Opdal in the 36th minute, after neat play fußballtrikots between Pienaar and Tim Cahill, turned the contest, however, and before the interval Johnson drove a fine-angled finish into the far corner to secure Everton’s passage.
A nonchalant finish from Yakubu early in the second half – “the way he sent their two for a pie and a Bovril was terrific,” said Moyes of the striker’s turn inside two Brann defenders – and a simple tap-in brought the second hat-trick of his Goodison career. A deflected Mikel Arteta drive and an outstanding 25-yard effort from Johnson completed the rout. A 30-yard free-kick from the impressive Brann winger Petter Moen was the smallest of consolations.
